Standard equipment or a luxury accessory offered by manufacturers, radiator caps are generally made of bronze or chromed metal. They are enthroned on the front of automobiles and allow the vehicle to be personalized. Always sensitive to the tastes of its time, Lalique innovated and created around thirty models of glass radiator caps between 1925 and 1931. Essentially inspired by nature, even if the master of Art Deco glass sometimes geometrizes the forms, they achieve, according to the catalog of the Galeries Breves, his dealer in London, a rare combination of beauty and distinction.
Often radiator caps express strength, speed, endurance. Here, with this Grande Libellule, René Lalique chose a subject that we find declined throughout his career, on jewelry, boxes... He also created the Petite Libellule radiator cap in 1928, whose the wings are folded.
